The Good

The Bad

The Verdict

  • Large toe rand for rocky terrain
  • Great ankle support
  • Lace locking system to keep laces snug
  • 3/4-length shank to prevent foot fatigue
  • A bit on the roomy side - narrow feet, take caution

This was one of the most impressive boots in our test. Best for wide and high-volume feet, it provided to be a stable, durable, stiff shoe that can handle longer treks on variable terrain without the comfort penalty associated with overly macho boots.

Support & Stability
Out of the eight shoes in the test, the Targhee II Mid is one of the sturdiest hikers, fitting somewhere between the super comfortable Vasque Talus and the brawny Garmont Amica. The ¾ length shank stabilizes the foot up to the ball, which means less fatigue on long hikes. The cushioned cuff reaches to the ankle, where the laces lock down to keep your foot super stable on uneven ground. I found the shoe to be roomier than some of the others (such as the Oboz Mystic Mid BDry, which stands out for its women’s specific fit), but if you have a wider foot, this may be the perfect hiker for you. Also be aware that the Targhee II Mid tends to run about ½ size small.

Quality and Construction, Durability
The upper on this shoe is nearly all nubuck leather, with textile detailing and breathable mesh on the tongue. This means the shoe is durable and won’t shred when the terrain gets rocky. The Targhee II also features a substantial dual density EVA midsole and noticeably large rubber toe rand for extra protection.

Comfort
This shoe is surprisingly comfortable for the stability and support it provides (compare to the Garmont Amica). The removable dual density EVA footbed offers much-needed cushion for long hikes and extra pack weight. I especially appreciated the thick ankle cuff on steep downhills when I needed to crank down the laces. (Again, I tend to need a narrower fit, but there was more movement than I would have expected, even for a higher-volume boot.)

Target Consumer
This shoe is perfect for those with a wider foot who need a tough, adventure-ready light hiker. This shoe prefers aggressive terrain and can handle a significant amount of abuse.

How We Tested It

For the field test, we took the Targhee II Mid on a day hike on variable terrain on a hot day and with a light pack. For consistency, all boots were tested with Goodhew's ridiculously comfortable alpaca and merino wool Sedona sock.

The products featured in this test have been loaned to the Gear Institute. For more on our policies regarding editorial objectivity and sample returns, see here.
