THE GOOD

  • Excellent coverage and fit
  • Secure and comfortable straps
  • Plush and extensive padding
  • Aesthetically pleasing

THE BAD

  • Hot on warm days
  • Heavy

THE VERDICT

The Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflect is an aesthetically-pleasing helmet that delivers outstanding fit and comfort. It provides excellent coverage without feeling bulky. However the plush and generously-placed padding that makes this helmet the most comfortable in the test generated the most head sweat on high-exertion rides on warmer days.

FULL REVIEW

COMFORT
The quality and the amount of the stock padding in the Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflex make it ideal for long rides. The plushest and most generously-placed of all the helmets in the test, the padding covers every point of potential contact. After a six-hour road ride or a fifteen-mile mountain bike ride, our tester felt no pressure points or need to adjust.

The side straps on the Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflex are composed of one thin strand of webbing to make the straps comfortable. Straps are spaced far enough apart at the helmet junction to not touch or chafe our tester’s ears.

VENTILATION
The Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflex has sixteen well-placed air vents that worked well, even when sitting idle or moving slowly up a climb. However ventilation decreased on warmer days or on rides when higher exertion levels were required.

Cyclists who live in geographical regions with humid summers will notice this limitation the most.

FEATURES
The Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflex’s polycarbonate shell in-molded with EPL liner extends fourteen inches from ear to ear and seventeen inches from front to back providing excellent head coverage. Plush, plush, anti-microbial pads are removable and washable. The non-removable visor has minimal adjustability but at 2.5 inches in length provides the most sun shading of all the helmets in the test.

FIT
A single glove-friendly dial at the back of the helmet makes adjustment fast, simple and can be done while riding. Our tester found that once the rear dial and the side straps were properly adjusted, the Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflex had a snug and comfortable fit with the least amount of wobble on our tester’s head.

WEIGHT
The Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflex was not designed for the weight-conscious cyclist. Thick webbing, extensive surface space, sturdy plastic retention strap and generous padding make it the second-heaviest helmet in the test though felt surprisingly light on the head.

How We Tested It

The Troy Lee Designs A1 Reflex was tested for two weeks on asphalt, gravel, singletrack in and around Minnesota on days with temperatures ranging from the low forties to the mid-seventies and on distances that ranged from six miles to fifty-six.
