THE GOOD

  • Lightweight
  • Compressible
  • Great against the elements

THE BAD

  • Limited pockets
  • A little fragile
  • Doesn’t breathe as well as others in the test
  • Hood doesn’t pack

THE VERDICT

The Gore Element GT Paclite Jacket was specifically designed for cyclists and it stacked up well against others in the test group. It was light and compressible, but riders felt it didn’t breathe as well as it should have for the price. Though not advertised as waterproof, it stood up to hard rain as if it were. The cut and fit were comfortable though a few features were less than ideal. Testers found it a little fragile when brushing past vegetation.

FULL REVIEW

Weathershedding
GORE-TEX fabrics are known for quality in repelling water and wind. The DWR (Durable Water Repellant) construction of the Gore Element GT Paclite Jacket repelled water better than any other in the test group through hard rain, steady drizzle, and mist.

Breathability
With over nine billion pores per square inch in its trademark GORE-TEX membrane, riders found the Gore Element GT Paclite Jacket resisted wind well and maintained comfortable body temperatures between 45 and 60 degrees. Beyond 60 degrees it became a little clammy.

Function
Unlike other jackets in the test with hoods, testers liked the way the Gore Element GT Paclite Jacket hood packed away by folding it up and cinching the draw-strings until it was taut against the neck.

Fit/Comfort
The fit was not a strong spot for the Element GT. Riders found the 100% polyester to be boxy in its movement where other jackets in the test group gave more slack. The front zipper has European left-handed styling, which was not very desirable to riders in the test group.

Packability
A great jacket for on and off the bike, the Element GT utilizes its trademark Paclite technology, which incorporates a protective layer on the inside of the GORE-TEX membrane, making a separate lining unnecessary. The result is a low weight jacket that is compressible enough to stow within its own front pocket and is easily stuffed into a jersey pocket. However t was more bulky than the winner in this category.

Durability
The Element GT is 100% polyester with a GORE-TEX membrane. The jacket itself felt strong and handled hard use, but a couple riders found weakness in the seams while manipulating the draw-strings at the hood and hem. To their credit, GORE does repair, replace, or offer a refund if riders are not satisfied.

Blend: 100% Polyester. GORE-TEX membrane.

How We Tested It

The jackets in this test were used in rain, high winds and sunny days  on asphalt, hard pack dirt, sand, granite and sandstone in Southern California. Temperatures ranged from 48 to 75 degrees and distances ranged from 10 to 40 miles with big climbs and descents.
